Yesterday, I attended a conference at my college campus; and the topic of the session was purpose. So many people ask, why am I here? What is the meaning of life? What should I be doing?
If you say that you've never once even had that thought cross your mind, I'd say you're lying to yourself. These are questions that everyone wonders at one point in their life, I know I did. Remember that these questions are important for you to ask yourself or else how will you find the answer to what you are looking for.
Take a puzzle for example, each piece is designed to fit perfectly with another one in the box. You, as the builder of the puzzle, must put the right pieces together. If you find two pieces that don’t fit together you move on to find other pieces they connect with. Even if you force the pieces together, the picture will be completely off because those pieces were never meant to be next to each other, those pieces had another purpose in the final picture.
So you see, you are unique and were made a certain way to carry out a certain task. I promise you nothing will make you happier than living out what you were meant to do all along. Everything on Earth is designed to carry out a specific function, so I want to ask you, what is yours? Have you discovered it, do you know?
Finding your purpose and living it out can lead to the most fulfilling life you could imagine.
I want to give you a basic structure on how to figure out what your purpose is so that you can begin to discover who you really are and what you are really made of, it’s called GPS.
Let’s start with the G, it stands for Gift.
You see your gift is something unique to you. It’s something you are really good at and don’t really have to work extra to get done. Your gift is something that brings you joy. You see, gifts are different than skills; skills are something learned overtime while gifts are something that build up on their own as you go through life. Some people have musical gift, they can sing or learn to play an instrument without even trying. Other people have artistic ability, they can draw, paint, dance and even write effortlessly. Some people have the gift of working with their hands, whether thats building or working outside with the land. Other people have the gift of teaching or working with children. As you can see, there are many gifts that people can have, those are just a few. Your gift is something that you do, that brings life into you; it is not something that’s a burden and you do it only because you think you should. Finding your gift, can sometimes be like a trial and error process, you have to search for it and try different things in order to discover it. I promise you, if you look for your gift, you’ll find it.
The P stands for Passion.
You might be confused, passion and gift are the same aren’t they? Actually they are two different things. Being passionate about something shows where your heart lies, what are you willing to die for, that’s your passion. See for myself, I have a passion for the arts; I have a deep love for the world of writing & literature and for the world of painting & drawing. Some people have passion for politics, sports, their freedom, helping others, and education just to name a few. Your passion is something that you will stick with through the ups and down, the good and bad days and something that isn’t just temporary but long term. So I ask you now, what is your passion? What is something that you care so deeply about that you couldn’t imagine yourself living without?
And finally the S, it stands for Serving.
Have you ever heard the quote that says it’s better to give than to receive. Have you ever lived out that quote? Let me tell you that it’s true. As kids, we think this is crazy and makes no sense, but as adults, we realize giving something to someone is much better than receiving something. Imagine a time in your life where you’ve given someone a gift, or helped out just for the goodness of giving to that person. You see as humans, we can do incredible and amazing things for each other, but we need to do it more often. We live in a world that’s hurting, lost, in poverty, hungry and barely able to stay alive. I want you take a moment and think of all of the bad things going on in world today, there’s not a day that goes by where you don’t hear about a world crisis in the news or in an article on the internet. We need to serve, help one another, we need to humble ourselves, realizing the world doesn’t revolve around us. We are all on this planet together and so why not live as if we care instead of holding onto selfish reasons on how we can personally grow and trample over each other.
So now I want to bring it all together, GPS: gift, passion and serving. These three things will guide you on how you can find why you are here. There are so many people on Earth that sometimes we can get lost, confused and feel so small & insignificant. Friend, I want to tell you today that you are here for a reason, you have a purpose and you matter. If you follow these steps, I promise you will find a purpose and live your life with true happiness and joy.
